Muscle is one of the four primary tissue types of the body, and the body contains three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle ().All three muscle tissues have some properties in common; they all exhibit a quality called excitability as their plasma membranes can change their electrical states (from polarized to depolarized) and send an electrical wave. Skeletal muscle tissue is composed of numerous muscle fibers which are separated from adjacent muscles and other tissues by a layer of dense, elastic connective tissue termed the fascia. This fascia can project beyond the end of the muscle and attach to bones, other muscles, and other tissues.

On the sympathetic) sympathetic innervation of the muscles in the area of distribution (as well as of the blood vessels Fig. 3.?Diagram of the essential sympathetic connexions. and sweat glands) is destroyed, but the sympathetic ganglia and the visceral nerves aro left undisturbed, and the patient.

In his discussion of the sympathetic innervation of striated muscle that led to this expression, Bayliss admits that " two kinds of function are performed by two separate kinds of muscle fibres, as in the auricle of the tortoise, or by separate muscles, as in the mollusc "; yet he goes on to express the commonly accepted view in these terms: " But.

Only those innervated by the somatic medullated nerves are actively contractile and under the direct control of the will. The slender fibres innervated by the sympathetic non-medullated nerves are not contractile (although their length is passively.

They move the bones that move the animal's body. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart. It is made up of striated muscle cells that are not under conscious control. The cells have only one nucleus each.

Intercalated discs join cardiac muscle cells end to end. Smooth muscle cells are nonstriated and have a single nucleus. Gross Human Anatomy, Lecture 1. STUDY. PLAY. Human Gross Anatomy Def. Without a microscope. Skeletal striated muscle fiber. What is the functional unit of muscle.

Periodic contractions followed by relaxation (in esophagus, stomach and small intestine -- all involved with churning and propulsion) -- maintained by action potentials.

As with striated muscles, contraction of smooth muscles depends on myoplasmic [Ca2+] However, smooth muscles Lack Troponin.

Cross-bridge attachment requires phosporylation of the myosin chain through the hydrolysis of ATP. The enzyme responsible is Myosin Kinase, which is activated by association with calmodulin (Ca2+-binding protein). Start studying Anatomy 9. Full text of "Gray’s Anatomy: Descriptive And Applied" See other formats. There are three major types of muscle, and their structure reflects their function. Skeletal and cardiac muscle cells are called striated muscle because of the very regular arrangement of their intracellular contractile units, sarcomeres, at the light microscope (LM) and electron microscope (EM) levels.

This regular arrangement imparts a cross-striated (or striped) appearance.Sarcomeres, the smallest contractile units of a striated muscle cell, are segments of myofibrils Each sarcomere has dark A bands and light I bands The A band contains the M line, the H band, and the zone of overlap Each I band contains thin filaments, but not thick filaments Z lines mark the boundaries between adjacent sarcomeres.
